Our story

Our innovation

Flavours of family planning, also dubbed “the cooking show,” is a people-oriented initiative that disrupts male engagement in family planning by employing kitchen materials for hands-on simulation to provide quality and gender-friendly family planning and reproductive health information, with a particular focus on men and boys engagement.

The kitchen, which is a key player in our innovation, symbolizes our commitment to gender norm transformation since cooking in the Rwandan context has been for so long seen as a female gender role. Our holistic aim is to decentralize family planning science to the level of understanding of many.

Our innovation has won the most competitive awards in reproductive health for young people in Rwanda “The innovation Iaccelerator (iaccelerator) phase II” This is a phased program and  mentorship-driven acceleration supporting young people with seed funding, training, and skills they need to bring innovative solutions responding to challenges relating to sexual and reproductive health, mental health, sexuality education, family planning, and other population development issues. You can learn more about the program here.

Background Story

The idea started in 2018 during preparations for the International Conference on Family planning in Rwanda in November 2018. At that time, our team worked with the outstanding team of World Vasectomy Day (WVD) that traveled to Rwanda with a mission to help develop a vasectomy program and inspire male engagement in family planning. This team was made by Colombian filmmaker and WVD creative director Nicolas Cuellar and twice Oscar-nominated filmmaker and WVD co-founder Jonathan Stack. We have collaborated to produce a four-part video series about vasectomy and its myths and misconceptions, male condom, and testicular cancer.

The outcome of WVD support and the collaboration gave a substantial foundation to our journey. You should not miss watching below our four series videos. If you want to learn more about WVD, visit their website. If you wish world vasectomy day to come to your country or community for collaboration, you can send your request to [email protected] | Below are the four videos:

1. Demonstrating the vasectomy procedure using eggplants and spaghetti.

2. Does vasectomy affect your sex drive? Can it cause prostate cancer? What does juice have to do with vasectomy? Learn here in this second episode.

3. Do you know all the steps to using a condom?

4. How many times a day do men touch their testicles? Learn about testicular cancer.
